I first heard about vaginal steaming on Instagram in late 2018. I knew I would be going off the birth control pill in 2019 and wanted to help my body and my hormones every way I could. I kept reading about steaming and in late May 2019 I went off the pill. Just a few weeks later I went to my very first vaginal steam session. The practitioner took time to learn my situation and helped me create my own blend that would support my libido and my overall bodily functions in a holistic way. During my session I meditated and relaxed, it truly was like a spa experience. Immediately after my steam session I felt so calm but also centered, aware of my body.
I later began studying to become a Vaginal Steam Facilitator as I wanted to help other women experience that peace and unity within themselves. In late 2019 I began steaming regularly in order to lengthen my menstrual cycle and enhance my fertility. Within two months I had lengthened my cycle fro 25 days to 27 days, and my cervical mucus became more fertile and pleasant smelling. My husband and I thankfully did not have to wait long to conceive once we started trying, and I am eagerly anticipating returning to vaginal steaming once I am postpartum.
Vaginal steaming is not New Age. Steaming and herbs have roots going back centuries in countries all around the world. The Trotula is a compilation of three medieval Italian texts on women’s health. There are many passages and remedies that include steaming the vagina. The Trotula was an influential work in the medical world for centuries after it was first published and gave insight from the female perspective on how to treat women’s conditions and illnesses.
I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and I am fascinated with learning about how steaming has been used traditionally around the world. The treatment and healing of women by women has a certain magic and power, a community created in love and trust and honoring feminine power and cycles.
I am very excited to continue my journey as a Vaginal Steam Facilitator and undertake training as a Peristeam Hydrotherapist. I want to work with women and create a culture of healing and positive intentions.
